You can't prevent identity theft. There are rings that are very sophisticated and can get your info even if you are extremely careful. With the technology available today, criminals need minimal information about a person. For example, a criminal can open a phone book and find a doctors name, address and phone number. They will use internet web sites and pay a small fee to order your dob or ss#. Once they have that, they can apply for credit with your information and order a copy of your credit report as well to find existing accounts that they can "take over". The best defense is to stay on top of your credit. Order a copy every year and look carefully at every item.
