No electricity? lol Uh it may have something to do with the large amount of poverty and famine during medieval times

They were originally called the Dark Ages by the scholars and "enlightened" men of the Renaissance era, around 1500 -- they saw their own time as being so much better, and so much superior, to the earlier times, and thus denigrated those old, dark ages. Nowadays historians realize that the "Dark Ages" were not really so dark, that the entire Medieval period was a transition period with many technological innovations and improvements along the way. Modern day historians often say that that time period (from about 500 to 1000 A.D., especially the earlier half) could be referred to as "Dark Ages" because of so little documented written history from that time period. Historians know very little about that time due to the scarcity of such original source documents, whereas we have many more original written documents from the later Middle Ages.
