  • Right OK: I live in a medium sized block of flats which is joint owned by two landlords, all the flats are either one or two bedroom. Most of the other people who live in the flats are Eastern European immigrants and around five or six (occasionally more) appear to live in each flat, and the residents seem to change regularly - which in itself is something I'm not all that comfortable with (the flowthrough of loads of different unvetted people that is). the thing is this is resulting in various problems - including a huge build up of rubbish which the bins provided for us (on assumption of one or two person occupancy for each flat) aren't big enough for - plus some of the other esidents don't take the greatest of care when disposing of stuff and don't place bags in bins, or tie up the sacks, causing it all to spill out everywhere - which is gross. There's also a major build up of unclaimed mail in the hallway and often a lot of noise at odd times of day and night - due to shift work presumably. This is all getting a bit annoying - under normal circumstances I would have a quiet word - but most of them speak very little English -(and it's difficult enough trying to persuade someone to alter their behaviour without being offensive when they *do* speak your language.) I thought about complaining to my landlord, but to complain about "the Eastern Europeans" might come across as racist (which I'm not)and I'm not sure that he could do a great deal anyway. Apart from all this I like my flat, and don't want to move - but this is all getting a bit silly considering what I'm paying for it I think I ought to be able to live somewhere pleasant. What do you think is the best course of action to get the whole thing solved with as little animosity as possible?
  • complain. dont use specific terms on who is doing all of this just bring it to their attention that you think you need a bigger garbage can. also check to see the limit of people allowed to stay in the place. if theres no set limit then theres nothing you can do but where I live im not allowed to have more than one person sleeping here
  • Call the health department & ask that your name be kept out of it due to the trouble it would cause after they leave & you would have to live with. If they are illigal immagrants maybe you can call immagration reform or email them. No matter where they come from sanitary condictions are a must. Anywhere they live they as well as any other teninant needs to keep their place clean for them & everyone else.
  • First off...you have every right to complain to your landlords. You don't have to say "the Eastern Europeans". Say those in flat #.... The trash issue would bug me too. Maybe a sign could be placed on the bin with "rules". It is too bad it needs to come to this, but some people just don't have any common courtesy for their neighbors. The noise at all hours of the night....well here in the US we have noise ordinances. Unwelcome or disruptive noise and we can complain to our local police who will show up and speak to the offending persons. Good Luck!!
  • Talk to your landlord anyway. Your complaints sound valid to me. The behavior of the other tenants has nothing to do with nationality or origin. Talk to the landlord and emphasize the financial loss he is incurring by having people damaging his property in such a way. If it were me, and I was given this information from a long standing tenant. I would appreciate it. This is how a pleasant neighborhood becomes a ghetto. People simply don't care about other peoples property. Take it up with the landlord first and give him the opportunity to respond. If nothing is done, contact the local authorities.
