Rock Band is probably better if you are able to get a couple of people to play it with you. Really, they are both pretty much the same thing. Guitar Hero 3 has a better set list, in my opinion, however.

Rock Band all the way! I play the guitar, hubbies on the drums and my son uses the mic. We have fun. I may be a little biased though as we have only played Rock Band. .................ROCK ON.....................

It completely depends on your situation. If you've got friends that will play with you a lot, Rock Band kicks butt. But if you're getting it for the guitar experience, Guitar Hero is tons better. Also, if your situation is a combination of this - you have friends to play with all the time, but no one wants to play drums or sing - Guitar Hero is still the way to go, even if it is only 2 player max. Just to warn you, if you're looking to buy you might want to wait until Guitar Hero IV comes out. It's looking like it might be the best of both worlds.
