  • Well it can hide danger (ala Jaws, Open Water) and that's good because it creates suspense.
  • The fear of water is kind of associated with the fear of the dark, claustrophobia, etc. Also, things (such as monsters) are easily hidden in water, and it created suspense, not knowing what lies beneath. There are lots of creepy things that have been found deep in the ocean, and people realize what little we know about what can creep up from it. It's mysterious, and we're always afraid of the unknown.
  • Most times in those movies, you cannot see beneath the surface, so it is about fear of the unknown. Also, the fear of drowning.
  • Because everyone is so vunerable in the water. Either because of something of the unseen grabbing you & pulling you under or something from deep down swimming up & eating you. Or your ship could sink & not be found for 100 years or your remains.
