It will go on as long as the US continues spending money it hasn't got. The first stage consequence is that imports will become more expensive and exports more valuable, which will tend to damp put the problem. But the other problem, which is starting to happen, is that the US will cease to be regarded as the reserve currency of choice. This will weaken the commercial influence of the US in the world.

i have no idea how long this will go on. i have read that the u.s. has borrowed money from china, the current administration has depleted the prior surplus along with all the money the u.s. had lent other countries. seems as though the current administration wants to "get the money and run"... they certainly won't be bearing the burden. as for the consequences, i also don't know, but Im Alec has made a really good point about the commercial aspect. it seems as though the american people will have to bear the burden of what is happening and the future generations pay the price, i know not the most positive outlook but thats just how i see it.
