I have a V6 2003 Ford Ranger. Do I need to use any special tools when trying to remove the fuel filter?

I have a 4-cylinder 2003 Ranger, so I do not know if the fuel lines are the same. If you have orange or green plastic clips on the fuel lines at the filter, you simple "squeeze" the curved portion of the clip as you pull the fuel line away from the filter. You can gently use a pair of common pliers to squeeze the clips if your fingers aren't up to the task. These are the only fuel-line locks on Ford products that do not require special tools.

I tried with my fingers with a screwdriver and pliers nothing seems to work. Perhaps I am squeezing them the wrong way? Does anyone have a diagram as to where the pressure has to be put?
