"Earth Day" was an idea conceived by John McConnell, who first submitted his proposal for such a holiday to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors in 1970. (http://www.themesh.com/abouted.html).

Earth Day is an event used to promote "A world view, goal and agenda for the people of Earth that will provide a healthy, sustainable future."

"Each year on Earth Day, March 20-21, the Peace Bell at the United Nations will ring at the moment spring begins. As this occurs, a celebration of life will cover our globe as bells ring in every community and people join in heartfelt love and devotion to the care of this nest in the stars: Earth, our wonderful home."
