When I sing it sounds good but if I record myself and play it back it sounds completely different. Is what I'm hearing not what's really coming out?

If you have an ear for music you should be able to hear whether or not you are in tune.
The sound itself being different is due to you filtering the sound of your voice when you hear it through your skull. Most people dislike hearing their voice recorded as it sounds so different to what they hear in their heads when they talk.

Aha!! How many of us sing in the shower, maybe the enclosed space and tiles make it sound good. We practice, trying to copy the Pro's. At a work DO, people are asked to sing. You have had a couple of drinks and think, here's my chance. Up onto the stage, try to crack a joke or two which nobody laughs at( you had nearly died laughing when you heard them) and then you hit em with your favorite, letting it all hang out. You bow to the audience while listening to the calls of. GETimoff. BOOOO, WHO BRUNG HIM. Take a tip from me. DON"T try it??
