When I lay my head down on a hard surface, or if I hang my head upside down, I hear a cracking and/or crackling sound in my head. What causes this?

well ive had crepitation go from the vertebrae thats level with my shoulders, and now its all the way to the left side of my head, i dunno what it is, one woman told me that its blood vessels that have been cantracted because of bad posture so its squeezing blood through, but she sais it goes away after a while. i hope it does because i still have the sound, and its been a LONG time.

It's probably the tendons in your neck that you are hearing. These tendons are often quite tense, essentially under high pressure, and have multiple points of connection to the skull and the bones in your neck and shoulders. A change in position and pressure can sort of "pop" them across the bumps of the cervical vertebrae, which results in a cracking or crackling sound. I've learned how to manipulate the tendons in my neck to do that on purpose, resulting in a sound loud enough to be heard across the room, just to annoy my husband -- although it is very easy to give oneself a rotten headache that way.

Incidentally, the term used for such crackling noises in your neck is "crepitation".

I think you need to get your blood pressure checked. My head crackles when mine is up too high. It drives me nuts.

I have crackling noises throughout my head and neck
and it just started this summer.....
I am only 40 years old and I think----honestly I think my brain is damaged. my e-mail address is kaenlm@yahoo.com they are diagnosing me with depression/anxiety gone wild....but i just started having hot flashes-but it stropped (like menopause and severe dry eyes)- but these crackling sounds in my head happen all the time (24/7) and now I can't concentrate at work...and I am hurt and frustrated and I might be locked up in a mental ward soon.

I had a cat scan, a neurologist too see if I have had a stroke---now I am going to go to a Chiropractor and
have him listen to my head crack...

Though that symptom of cracking sounds is in your head it is not listed on the list of that website, but it is because of them. for if you listen to me you will do good to believe me it is people who are torturing you not letting you sleep just like they do a EEG on a persons brain, reads you brain activity, there is now the techonlogy to do mind control. your short term memory is probably affected too. do not let them make you afraid, do not make any quick changes in your life, your thinking is affected with fear.
Do not get on drugs, saying you are mentally ill. Do not let anyone tell you you are mentally sick get on sleeping drugs, depression or any other drugs that work on the mind. You are not crazy. Calm down. those are people using technolgoy trying to drive you crazy. they are giving you very vivid dreams, they are controlling your dreams. Do let them control you with fear, that is what they want. you not to know, so that your will loss everything, they want you on drugs. they want you to think you are crazy. DO NOT LISTEN TO THEM LISTEN TO ME.
