  • Under the dash, usually on the left side, there is a diagnostic block. Mechanics can attach an instrument to this to get the diagnostic code, which will pinpoint the problem. I had a 1994 LeSabre that my son was able to connect some contacts under the dash and pull off the code, which turned out to be a cam sensor, which was $400. There seemed not to be ANY adverse affect, so several mechanics said to just let it go, the light will still be on 3 years from now. Google GM diagnostic codes if you want to see some of the possibilities, or maybe just google 'check engine soon". Mine was "service engine soon", which was related to air filter clogged.
