    What do you mean? If you are talking about why they have a downer effect after you get high on them, then the reason is all chemical. When you do most drugs they cause your brain to overreact and release more "feel good" chemicals than it normally would. When the high wears off your sensitivity to and ability to produce these feelings is diminished- resulting in a period of time when you feel crappy.
