  • It is a myth that water swirls a different direction down a toilet bowl positioned north or south of the equator. The effect, known as Coriolis Effect, applies to larger systems like the weather. The rotation of the earth (once per day) is weak compared to water draining down a sink (hundreds to thousands times in a few seconds). The Coriolis Effect is so small it doesn't have any impact on water going down a drain.
  • Although the toilet swirling is a myth, the rule applies to other things. For example rivers will meander one way in the northern hemisphere and the other in the south, at the equator the is no meander. So if the toilet swirl were ture the water would go straight down.
  • There are a couple of possibilities. The head pressure from the throne might be forcing the water through an orifice that is tilted to make a counter clockwise flow. Or, you are in the southern hemisphere where the flow would naturally be counter-clockwise.
  • It is all based on the design of the ports in the bowl and nothing to do with what hemisphere of the planet you reside in.
  • It is because of the lack of vegemite in our diets, our waste is therefore designed to move better in a counter-clockwise motion. But in Australia, they flush clockwise, do to the aerodynamic qualities of vegemite.
  • It is because of the coriolis effect. Water flows only one way on the planet, in one single direction. Based on your position on the planet (i.e., what hemisphere you are on) you relatively see it flowing either clockwise or clockwise. Look at a ball and picture the water flowing around it from left to right. Stand a figurine the north half and the water moves one way in relation to them. Stand them on the south half, keeping the imaginary water flow in the same left to right direction, and notice how the water is flowing in a different direction according to their perspective. That is called the coriolis effect.
  • It's like sitting on a bidet.
  • They use slop jars.
  • It stands still.
  • Well then, that FLUSHES that theory down the DRAIN!!
  • Toilets and drains have nothing to do with the coriolis effect. Small bodies of water cannot be included in the coriolis effect. Read this article if you are really interested. http://www.loc.gov/rr/scitech/mysteries/coriolis.html
  • Mine flushes clockwise.
  • Your turds must must curl from right left to right determining the flow of the water.
  • If it goes the other way .. it will fly out the cuzzy (toilet) ..
  • It goes straight down here but then Britain is after all the centre of the universe!
  • This is a myth. Water goes down the plug hole in the same direction regardless of what hemisphere you are in. The deciding factors are mainly the design of the plug hole itself.
  • Interesting but incorrect premise : ) It doesn't matter which part of the world the drain is located in, it has nothing to do with the direction of the water draining. "The boring truth is that water drains every which way no matter what hemisphere you're in, for reasons which have to do mostly with the shape of the drain, the way you poured in the water in the first place, and so on."
