  • Jets fly at about 550 mph, about 92% of the speed of sound. Any faster and they start getting troubles with the sound barrier. Very small business jets and propeller aeroplanes fly slower. Propeller planes will tend to flya at about 250-300 mph.
  • Wikipedia says that a Boeing 747 has a cruise speed of 555 MPH. An L-1011 cruises at just under Mach-1. Thats seems pretty dog gone fast for cruising.
  • Large passenger aircraft vary their cruising speeds between 500 and 600 mph ground speed (depends on type, load, altitude and winds).
  • All the answers above are right on the numbers but catching the jet stream can increase those numbers up to 100 MPH more, making some flights eastward seem much faster
