My Mum's small dog certainly doesn't know its a small dog! It thinks its ten foot tall and bullet proof!
-
Probably so

As they lack a forebrain, I do not believe dogs are capable of that level of self awareness. My mom had a chihuahua that was absolutely convinced it was a rottweiler and could kick any dog's butt and I had a friend with a doberman that was scared to death of other dogs, cats, and even freaked out over grasshoppers.

I don't think they have a clue regarding their size in relationship to people or other dogs. I have a Yorkie that goes after everything and everyone. He's only 3 1/2 lbs. but acts like he's a Pit Bull. He went after the cable guy when I had broadband installed. And the cable guy wanted to know if he'd bite him. I said he's all bark and no action. But thats the way it is with everyone. He really goes after the other dogs at the local dog park. It's pretty funny!

only if they are being challenged by a dominant dog of larger stature do dogs (especially small ones) suddenly realize their size.

no, I've seen a Chihuahua stand up to my huge Black Lab at the park.

Not a clue. I had a 9lb lhasa-poo who was viciously attacked by a 100lb rottweiler. My little guy never gave up the fight, and ended up biting the rottie more than the rottie bit him. (we went to the same vet) He was a tough little dude who had no idea he was less than a foot tall.
