The +/- stands for goals scored for or against while that player was on the ice. For every goal that is scored for the player's team, he would receive a (+1). Conversely, for every goal scored AGAINST the player's team, he would receive a (-1).

on the powerplay shorthanded players aren't penalized but if they were to score short handed...power play players would get a minus...gamer 88 has the basics correct
