    Hamilton was a federalist and promoted a strong central government, as opposed to Jefferson who supported states' rightsw. He would have preferred to abolish state governments altogether and wanted to broaden the poers of Congress. As Secretary of the Treasury he promoted foreign and national investment and sound credit practices.
