Actually, Britain and England are different names for the same country.

England is part of Great Britain. Right? Actually it is pretty confusing to those of us who don't live in an area where multiple countries are commonly just lumped together like that, unless you're referring to the whole continent.

As a Scots/Irish person, I am always amused when it comes to sporting events. If England do not qualify for a tournament, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland become 'British', however if England do qualify, they are referred to as English.

I know. England is just one of the components of Britain. The others are Wales and Scotland. The full name of the UK - the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland - includes Northern Ireland, which is located on another island.

I believe most people do technically know that - they just get lazy when they're talking about it. Same as we all say "America" when what we really mean is the USA.

I find it hard to understand people who do NOT realize that. England is England and Britain is the British Empire which includes England. I have seen this misconception before.

I've learned to accept that people will always confuse England, Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales) and the United Kingdom!(Great Britain plus Northern Ireland) But some of the other answers to this question are highly entertaining!

I thought it was the U.K. New England is used to describe the geographical area north-east in the united states correct? that is all i think of it although i will be honest and say i make my mistakes too. the same as with calling native americans indians.

It's not hard to understand at all . Using the US as am example Hawaii is not the US. Britain is the union of three previously sovereign states states. Scotland , England and Wales (under the same crown for ages) and Northern Ireland. It's almost likes states in America also.
