    Oil is the one commodity that modern nations can't live without. The only reason most nations must have large amounts of high debt US dollars is to buy oil. Without OPEC and other nations enforcing a US dollar based oil exchange nations could finally get rid of their dollars (which are constantly falling in value like a bad stock) for something more secure (Euros maybe or Rubles). This would make an already valueless US dollar truly valueless and collaspe the US economic system.
