  • I'll go with the charity. At least if they're going to spend it on booze they'll look professional while doing it.
  • If you help at least one person, it is always good.
  • I know it sounds cruel, but giving money to a panhandler is not a good thing. If they don't use it for booze or drugs, chances are very good they are eating junk food and other empty calories. An organized charity can use the money to help many people. Also, having cash could them at risk of being robbed by drug addicts or other street people...
  • Neither one is better - each action provides a different benefit to the street person. Giving to an organised charity provides more 'goods' - a meal, or a bed for the night or counselling services. Giving the money directly provides the opportunity for the street person to make his/her own choices about what to do with the money. You may disapprove of how they spend it (alcohol, cigarettes, etc.) but making choices is one of the things that makes us human and the dignity that that can provide is priceless. Having other people, no matter how well-meaning they are, make all your choices for you is degrading. If you want to provide both, try giving a street person a booklet of gift certificates from McDonald's or some other place like that - they get to eat and they get to make their own choices about what and when to eat.
  • Definitely an organized charity. Always give street people THINGS or food, not cash.
  • Cut out the middle men, and give direct to those who need it. Some, but by no means all, organized charities cream large amounts off for "overheads".
  • I don't think there is a 'better' level. I will help who I can when I can but will give preference to the people I see before me, who are in immediate need of help and care.
