To backform. To backform is to create a new word (from a previously existing word) by using the procedure of back formation. Back formation removes a hypothesized prefix or suffix from an already existing word in order to create a new word of a different part of speech (a verb from a previously existing noun, for example). Among a legion of examples of back formation: the verb _to resurrect_, from the previously existing noun _resurrection_. the verb "to Tase" (as in "Don't Tase me, bro."), from the previously existing proper noun Taser. Now, many nouns that end in _-ation_ refer to the result of a process. From these nouns, dropping the suffix -ation usually creates a verb that refers to the process. If we treat _back formation_ as a noun, and apply the procedure of back formation to it, the resulting verb would be _to backform_. There is one authority on the net that does use _to backform_ in the manner I just described: grammar.about.com/od/ab/g/backformterm.htm Alas for me, no other authority on the English language accepts _to backform_.
