  • when I was a kid it was a working class suburb... but in the last ten years a hell of a lot of up market snobs have moved into it and are changing it so it looks and feels like 'double bay' now ...bloody shame
  • Balmain is a cool suburb. Just outside of the city centre. It is a cafe suburb with great shops and an easygoing atmosphere. I lived there a few years ago and really enjoyed it. The people are really friendly.

  • its a FANTASTIC suburb in sydney's inner west. Quite frankly one of the best areas in sydney. Miss it quite alot since being in London. Best coffee in sydney as well. On Darling St (Balmain) a cafe named Bertoni's. Amazing coffee and great service. And two shops down is a patisserie, they do a great almond and sugar twist! Go on the weekend when locals are out with either their prams or their dogs. It has gone slightly more upmarket now. Property prices have jumped so high in that area... But amazing place to visit.
  • It's in the inner city, not too far from the centre, but far enough to be its own self. It is an arty suburb, lots of cafes and boutique shops. The houses date from the early to mid 20th C.
