I think they are ...seems they are tasty treats for birds during the day ...and yeah nothing worse than stepping on them in bare feet ...yuk!

I don't know if they are specifically nocturnal or not..but they must be kept moist all the time and that won't happen on most days. The nights are usually cooler with a higher humidity.

No. They just prefer the night. Back porches are cooler at night.

Slugs feed mostly at night, although they occasionally are active on overcast or rainy days. They are not nocturnal but they come out in the evening because it is usually wetter and cooler out. Slugs don't like the heat of the sun. It dries them up ... deadly for a slug. They also come out in the early morning when the dew has moistened the ground. http://www.backyardnature.net/snail_sl.htm http://www.ghorganics.com/page13.html http://www.ext.colostate.edu/pubs/insect/05515.html

Slug are a sort of shell-less snail and mostly come out at night when it is cooler and damp from dew. They do come out during the day so no they are not nocturnal but will try and stay in the shaded areas. They do go underground during the winter months. One way to keep them off your porch is to lay a bead of salt around the outer edge. salt will harm them and they will not cross a line of salt. after a few nights they will change their pattern and the salt no longer will be needed. They are a creature of habit and will follow the same path each night.
