To understand why the person is angry, what method they are using to express thier beliefs. you shouldn't literally argue, it should be a debate or discussion. But listening would probably have to rank in the top. if you dont listen how can you solve the arguement?

..by talking it through w/ the persons involved, with a couple of beers and shots.. on the side :P

Be ready to listen to both sides

I've found that sometimes simply not getting too emotional is the best way to deal with an argument. For example, when there's a break in the conversation, you could mention something about how it's okay that you're just having a disagreement. As long as you aren't being condescending about the other person's feelings, I find downplaying the situation to be the best way to diffuse tension. Sometimes if it's a personal relationship situation, I'll even shrug and say something like "Above everything, I'm glad you feel close enough to me to talk openly this way." It catches people by surprise and it will calm them down if they are getting too frustrated.

Prove your facts.

Stop arguing. Provide facts to prove your case. Until you can provide those facts, be quiet. No amount of rehashing the same words will avail you.

Simply stop!! Walk away until cooler heads prevail and you can actually talk, if no solution can be reached through listening and respecting the other's opinions then agree to disagree.
