Very sad. I have often wondered if there is any way that we could place pontoons out there for them to use as artificial rest stops.

Very, very sad :(. Something like this hasn't happened before in recent history, and yet people refuse to think that something isn't right. And polar bears are far from the only species which is affected by it, it's merely one of the most obvious examples
