  • My Niece had this problem after A broken ankle, surgery, and healing process: The best remedy I know for this is the following: First A few questions: How long has the cast been off: Where was the breakage: Was surgery involved; Were sutures/stitches used: After the cast was removed did the DR. give specific instructions for care: Some swelling is 'normal', but, if extensive swelling is occurring seek certified medical attention. I relay this information to help you due to the fact of my nieces prior experience and state that I am not a medical Dr. and I relay this information from that experience.... For swelling; ELEVATE injury site (lay prone, elevate injured area ( ankle ). Elevate to 'above the heart' ( meaning when injured person is in prone ( lying flat )position the injured area ( ankle ) should be above the injured persons chest area. Apply cold compresses for fifteen ( 15 ) minutes ( NO MORE than 25 minutes ) using a malleable ice bag ( ie; ACE-Reusable cold compress OR crushed ice in 'Ziploc' baggie ) remembering to not apply ice-pack directy to skin ( wrap ice-pack in a towel ). Use the technique of '15 minutes on 30 minutes off' for 2-3 days or until swelling subsides. If swelling continues contact certified medical help. For 'achey-ness', meaning 'nagging, aching, any pain,' contact your DR. or nearest available medical facility. I hope this helps ! Take Care !! Tealey
