How can you tell the difference between a kleptomaniac and 'just a thief'? (I'm not trying to dismess kleptomania- I really want to know.)

A kleptomaniac steals to satisfy an emotional insufficiency so they will steal things they do not need, do not want, and from anywhere. The point is to steal - not what is being stolen. A thief is someone who steals for personal gain.

I don't think there really is no way of knowing a true Klepto from a person just stealing...The bottom line is, the klepto and the theif both know stealing is wrong and thats the only thing the judge will care about.

A kleptomaniac is someone who is manes (crazy) about kleptein (stealing). It means it's an addiction, something they have to do, like having a drink or a cigarette. A thief may steal less often.

Kleptos are compelled to steal things they don't actually need. Using things of little value, like pens, batteries, small toys. I knew a woman that was compelled to steal when she was in an abusive realtionship. Something about regaining power. Thieves usually plan their crimes. I'm not sure where supermarket grazers fit in.
