Legend has it that in 1926, Louis Armstrong dropped his sheet of lyrics while recording "Heebie Jeebies Dance", and began scatting to cover the mistake. Some say he deliberately dropped the page so he'd have an excuse for improvisation. The technique became immensely popular in jazz and blues circles.

I always thought it was Ella Fitzgerald...but I am not absolutely certain of this.
