The exchanges garlands as a gesture of acceptance of one another. Earlier when a much eligible princesses reached age of marriage their father would announce some kind of contest and princesses get to choose their husbands to be from a line up of prince by putting a garland on him which would eventually culminate into marriage on a later auspicious date. Now a days that custom is included into all Hindu marriages.
