  • It is for bikers or people to watch out for them in the dark.
  • Someone has come along and identified it as a tree which probably will be cut down. It might have been done by a city official or a tree surgeon.
  • It has been marked for a gangland mob style hit. Watch out for splinters.
  • It could mean many things. It depends on who marked it. In the woods it is probably marked as part of a tree sale and this indicates which trees should be cut, or not cut, the edge of a sale, a boundary. In town it could also mean that that tree is slated to be cut. It might also mean that someone was playing with a can of paint, or this is where the scanvenger hunt's next clue is hidden.
  • I've seen it mean 'these are the keeper trees', if the other trees are marked with blue slashes. Or I've seen it mean "cut only these trees" when there weren't any other marks. And then again, I've seen it just mark out territory lines and in boundary. That's what they mean in upstate New York where I live. Our next door neighbor is the state woods. That's how they mark the line between us. In California it meant, cut them down.
  • An X orange mark on the trunk of a City tree means that it will be removed or cut down. An orange circle or dot means that the tree will be pruned . http://www.mississauga.ca/portal/residents/urbanforestry?paf_gear_id=9700018&itemId=6100111
