I'm actually not a GIMP user, but I would assume that if it's like most image editing software, the format it saves to by default is a program-specific format for the purposes of editing. See if GIMP has other file extension options, particularly JPG, GIF, and PNG.
After you edit the picture, click 'Save As' and change the file format and save it as a 'jpeg'. This will solve your problem
Are you saving the images as a format that can work online? They would be .jpg, .png, .gif these are the most common ones. The GIMP supports many file types scroll down to the bottom of this page to see what file types are supported.

You're reading I like to edit pictures on a program called GIMP. i would like to put these pictures on a website, but whenever i try to upload them, it wont let me and i can only open the pictures using GIMP. can anyone help?
