From what I have read, only low-sodium tuna should be fed to dogs, but the water packed is better than oil-packed, since the oil is not a 'natural' oil. The fattier fish are actually better because they contain omega-3 acids that are good for the coat. Many premium dog foods contain salmon as a primary ingredient. Salmon is a better alternative than tuna. You must be careful of the mercury levels in fish, however, as well as the bones that can be found in canned fish, such as salmon. Mackerel is also found in some dog foods, but it is considered among the highest for mercury levels. This is a good article about fish for pet food: http://www.animalwellnessmagazine.com/m/m83/main.htm Bottom line is that dogs love fish and some dogs (such as sled dogs) live on a almost exclusive fish diet. Although I wouldn't recommend this for your pet, feeding some tuna in moderation should be fine for your dog, as long as it has no adverse reactions such as diarrhea. Try to choose low-sodium, don't overdo it, and you should be fine.

Canned tuna fish packed in water is ok to feed dogs but not very often.Canned tuna in oil is also ok to feed because dogs need to be given oil as part of their diet.If you looking to feed fish i can recommend salmon, can of mackrel or sardines are very nutricious.you can feed those once a week along with whatever you feeding at the moment

Definately not bad for a dog if given up to twice a week but no more. As mentioned above (low sodium), when feeding canned tuna purchase "Tuna and Water". Once ready to feed I personally rinse the Tuna water that's in the can right out. It's better and healthier for your dog. Good luck and take care

Canned Tuna or Salmon is OK...both have omega 3 in them and that is great for a dog. RAW Tuna, Salmon or even sardines is EVEN BETTER! http://www.skylarzack.com/rawfeeding.htm http://pets.groups.yahoo.com/group/rawfeeding/ My Dogs and Cats only eat raw meats. I've scored (God Bless my local FREECYCLE community! FREE, FREE, FREE!) some beautiful Tuna, Maui Maui, Trout and Perch too, from the good folks cleaning out their freezers on several occasions. (More often I score Poultry, part or whole...2 whole turkeys on different occasions, Pork, beef, deer, elk...some times ground, usually whole parts, usually freezer burned, but JUST FINE AND DANDY for the dogs and cats, nutritionally freezer burned is FINE for them and us too, in truth, we just don't like the slight change in texture or the flavor compromise, the dogs and cats could care a less! lol) The changes in our dogs and cats general health, teeth, gums, coats..and BEHAVIORS is nothing short of AMAZING... Grumpy Sadie cat...isn't grumpy anymore, almost never! She is still the senior Queen, but she is SOOOOO affectionate now, and more tolerant of the other animals, it's like a dream come true! NO BODY HAS TARTER ON THEIR TEETH...which results in NO NEED for expensive dental work. My Search and Rescue dog, Hannah, has great energy, but is no longer so HYPER in her behaviors, she is calmer, more focused and joyful at any task she is asked to do. They all poop LESS, because they all use ALL OF THE nutrition from their Raw Meats, bones, organs We save money on Cat litter, because of this; and the dog's poop just turns crumbly and then to dust in about 3 days, unless it is pouring rain, then it takes 4 or 5 days to COMPLETELY GO AWAY. Here are a couple of Raw Feeding photos, IF AB will work and let me post them, sometimes now it does, sometimes not! It has a lot of salt in it so I wouldn't make it a regular food, but it's fine as a treat. And as a treat, tuna in oil is fine too. Some amount of fat is necessary for a dog's health including a "shiny coat"
