This is a loaded-end question, because no particulars are given. it would be impossible to give an answer, without more information. firefighting positions vary from state to state, in the local government, in the state government and even in volunteer firehalls. the job description of each fire position, also varies as above. need a more specific question, like which city, local, or state level. i can give one generalized answer, that i believe applies to all firemen and all firehalls. sooner or later, as a fireman, you will have to cook dinner for your shift.

in our department we run like this engine- when arriving on scene a status update is givin to units enroute by the officer a water supply is established by the hydrant man/woman at the hydrant then the hookup man(woman) hooks up the hose to the intake. the other 2 seats on the engine are filled by the interrior attack crew who obviously put attack the fire. the driver doubles as the pump operator one on scene. truck- when the truck arrives we have the can man(woman) and the irons man(woman) who force entry if it has not already been done by the engine crew once entry is forced they begin a search with the officer. the other 2 on the truck are the outside vent man(woman) and the roof man(woman) who put up ground ladders untill the order is givin to vent the roof. rescue- if the manpower is available the rescue crew sometimes acts as a rapid interventions team but they can also be doing a number of other things hope this helps
