I would like to think it burns more considering the longer period of time your heart is racing fromit, rather than walking, it has to burn more calories.

no. Or at least I don't think so. Sure it takes you longer to walk it, but I think the fact that you get your heart beat above 100 beats per minute, burns a lot more. Please, don't take my word for it though....

Well for me, running hurts more. I was on a brisk walking frenzy one year and I was told that it did burn the same amount of calories as long as I kept my heart rate at a certain level. I lost nearly 40 lbs that year.

no it does not.Have you ever used a treadmill that has a calorie counter and an adjustable incline? You definitely burn more calories running than walking in the same time span. Running burns more calories faster, but usually you can walk further than you can run. Also, walking up an incline or steps will help you burn calories faster. To compensate (not run) you will have to walk a longer distance or steep inclines to burn the same amount of calories as you would running.

it is not whether you choose to run or walk that will determine how many calories you burned...it will depend on how far you go. If you choose to walk a mile or run a mile you are carrying the same load over the same distance. Work, in this case would remain constant, however if you run a mile you are generating more POWER. But since calories are measured by an equation similiar to work and not power. You will burn about the same number of calories whether you walk or run a mile. Unless you are sprinting at a speed that would generate more drag and wind resistance wich would require you to apply greater force over the same distance...they are pretty much equal. The difference is pretty hard to measure. Just remember work is force applied over distance. Power is work over time. If you take the time to understand those to equations you will be able to answer the question yourself.
