A shirt is a dress shirt

A T-shirt is a buttonless shirt made of cotton jersey or occasionally other fibers mixed in to a predominantly cotton fabric, but still a jersey-knit. A shirt is just... any shirt. :)

1) "In American English, shirt can refer to almost any upper-body garment other than coats and bras (the term "top" is sometimes used in ladieswear). In British English, a shirt is more specifically a garment with a collar, cuffs, and a full vertical opening with buttons; what is known in American English as a dress shirt." Source and further information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shirt 2) "A T-shirt (or tee shirt) is a shirt, usually buttonless, collarless, and pocketless, with a round neck and mostly (but not necessarily) short sleeves, that is pulled on over the head and covers most of a person's torso. The sleeves of the T-shirt extend at least slightly over the shoulder but not completely over the elbow (in short-sleeve version). A shirt that is either longer or shorter than this ceases to be a T-shirt. T-shirts are typically made of cotton or polyester fibers (or a mix of the two), knitted together in a jersey stitch that gives a T-shirt its distinctive soft texture. T-shirts are often decorated with text and/or pictures. T-shirt fashions include styles for men and women, and for all age groups, including baby, youth and adult sizes." Source and further information: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/T-shirt So a T-shirt is basically a particular kind of shirt.

the biggest difference is ...one you wear a tie around your neck..the other ..a set of 'pucka shells'....well you did back in the 60's and 70's ...cool man!

Wow! Great question...hmmm.... When I think of a shirt, I think of a general catagory: includes T-Shirts, Polo Shirts, Button Down shirts, Blouses, etc. T-Shirts are big, loose, cotton,....uuh....for lack of a better word...."thing" that goes over your head. Normally, I think of T-Shirts of being male t-shirts with a rounded neckline, and sleeves that go to at least the elbow.

T shirts don't have a collars, buttons or long sleeves!

What i know about shirt and T-shirt Shirts is those people wear to work in the office. They normally comes with long sleeves, buttons and collars. The shirts' material is smooth, very smooth and soft. A T-shirt is simply a casual garment people wear on streets. It usually has round collar/collar, short/long/no sleeves, and comes in all sorts of colors and fashion.

I think to define the difference it would be 'buttons' and possibly pockets and a collar.
-
T-shirts have short sleeves hence when laid out they look like a 'T'
