well make sure your hand are clean firstly! Then hold the ball and pull both side gently with even force! Then you should find it comes off ok

if you have a cbr (or bcr .... either way you say it, a ring with a ball) you might need ring spreaders, they are like pliers that open instead of close .... sometimes its hard to get a good grip in the ring and the bead to open it and spreaders will open it for you while you hold the bead

    Take it out... lol

Nah.. Barbell - ball will screw off. BCR - ball will just pull out.

Clean the area for a little while afterwards because it's open again. If something gets in the hole it may become irritated.

An addition to the above- if you're planning to take it out permanently and need to do so quickly, and you have a captive-bead, you CAN use regular pliers. However I'd only suggest this if it's coming out permanently and you're not planning on using that piece of jewellery again.
Needle-nosed pliers work well- the best thing you can do is clean the tips thoroughly and wrap them in athletic tape. This will keep your earring from getting scratched up, which can provide a great place for bacteria to grow. Just insert into the ring and expand the tips of the pliers- this will pull the two ends of the ring apart just enough to pop the bead out. Then just rotate the ring through your ear until it comes out. Be gentle though- I had to do an "emergency removal" before a basketball game and it hurts quite a bit unless you work slowly and carefully.

your BEST option, however, is to go back to the person who pierced it. They'll have the proper sterilization equipment and ring-closing pliers needed to open it back up.
