I think bacteria is controlled in cooling water systems because it can lead to disease. bacteria can grow in the damp and aerated conditions of a cooling tower and be spread through the air circulation system of a building spreading disease. Biological growth can also build up in pipes resulting in restricted and reduced flow. The chemistry of cooling tower water is also controlled to reduce the deposits of mineral scale that can also result in restricted and reduced flow or poor energy transfer in heat exchangers.
