i think its a silly comparison! besides,these are two continents having the same names and on the other hand a country sharing that same name).note here that we`re talking about a single country(nation) and continents(north and south) its just like comparing("think")south africa(a country) to africa(continent)

America is one of the western continents,and world wide ,represents Canada,Mexico,and the USA. The United States of America is one country within the continent.

It really depends on the context. Technically, America refers to the continent where the United States of America is the country. However, there are no other countries in either North or South America that contain the name "America" and therefore it has become common usage to have America refer to USA.
