I typed into google: "is osama dead?" and most pages point to the fact he IS dead but the powers that be are keeping quiet about it for, who knows what purpose.

It's sound policy to have at least one bogeyman on the loose, in order to ensure continued military spending. If the fear and anger levels were to subside, there may be calls from the masses to divert some of those funds to other initiatives like... oh, I dunno, social welfare programs.
