Vegetarians get their protein from eggs, lentils, and soy. Other than that I think you can follow any diet. Just substitute these things for meat and seafood.

eat several small meals a day, at least one dark green vegetable and an orange vegetable. You can take protein vitamins instead of meat, and they're fat free! :3

I've been a vegetarian for about 20 years. I don't eat seafood, or any meat. And please, don't call me god! (smile). Are you new to being a vegetarian? Protein can come from soy products and dairy. If you are trying to loose weight and maintain a healthy diet, eat lots of veggies. When eating veggies, a good rule of thumb is to eat a variety of colors (dark greens have iron and calcium, orange veggies have beta carotine, so think rainbow when you eat). Eat fresh fruit (not canned), again, think rainbow! Keep dairy to a minimum. Cut back on carbohydrates (bread products). You may also want to talk to your doctor about any health issues you may have that would effect your diet.

How would I know how much to eat though?

You do not need to eat ANY animal products to get enough protein. Beans and rice, when mixed together, make a complete protein source. Lots of fiber, too!

protein shakes

Being a vegetarian doesn't mean you will automatically have a healthier diet. There is more to health and weight control than simply cutting out one particular item from your diet. You can indeed maintain an unhealthy weight, or even GAIN more weight on a vegetarian diet. Carbs are most likely the culprit, though you may have other issues. Sit down, seriously take a look at your REAL LIFE eating habits, record everything you actually eat (including quantities and times) and see what you get. You may be surprised. It might NOT reflect what you're expecting. Plus, if you go to a doctor or nutritionist to get help, this information will be EXTREMELY valuable to them in helping you. I'm by no means a vegetarian, but I understand what your concerns are. Just as I need to maintain and regulate a well balanced diet, you need to do so also. You'd be surprised how many people really don't pay that much attention to their eating habits!
