When and how were state county boundaries, or parishes, calculated in America? they all have different shapes and sizes.

    They were usually tied to geographical bundaries and people'e property lines. I owned 500 acres and wanted to be in town X, then town X would extend to the boarder of my property. I you extend that over the history of a city or county, the boarders look funky.
