Fast twitch and slow twitch muscles are made up from muscle fibres which perform differently under certain conditions. The easiest way to describe is to compare an althlete such as a sprinter and a long distance runner. If you compare an athlete like Carl Lewis or Linford Christie you can see they are heavily built, their power is explosive and it has been known for some of these athletes to perform the 100 metres without actually taking a breath, the 100 metres being just about on the limit for this. Fast twitch muscles have usually more definition and build up better over repition exercise such as weight training etc... The long distance althletes (Sebastian Coe, Paula Radcliffe ) will be lighter built, but whereas they won't tend to explode from a start line, they will be able to keep up a steady pace over a long distance, working aerobically, the training would be similarly aerobic so as not to build up these fast twitch muscles which wouldn't be much use in their chosen event.
