This might be a difficult task to do at home. To determine what grows on athe top of a pop can, one would wipe a sterile swab on the top of the cans (or many cans to make the expirement more accurate, then they would wipe these swabs in a growth medium in a dish. They would set these dishes in an incubater that is set to the optimal temerature for the bacteria and mold to grow. after a set amoun t of time they remove the dishes from teh incubator and look at what has grown. A skilled microbiologist can then identify the different species that have grown by the color and patterns of the bacteria colonies.
