  • Salt/pepper..bikes, arms, legs, ears, hmmm you're right! Maybe to contrast, or to better help one another! I wonder why we only have one head when you know the old saying....:D
  • every thing must have an opposite.
  • Up doesn't just have the counterpart Down - it's also got Side to Side :)
  • Many things also come in fours: Four directions: north, south, east, west. Four seasons: Spring, Summer, Winter, Fall. Four terrestrial planets: Mercury, Venus, Earth, Mars. Four gas giant planets: Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus, Neptune. There are four chambers in the heart. The same can be said for fives, sixes, eights, and any other number. In Numerology, you can figure out the meaning of a number by the kinds of things that exist in nature that embody that number. Seven and three, however, are kind of rare in nature. That's part of the reason why they are given religious significance.
  • They don't, necessarily. We are bilaterally symmetrical, and therefor like to divide things like that. We are people with two sides and tow of most things. But, for example, a five-pointed starfish would not divide things left/right with the same alacrity. And I think that good/bad is very much a false division which we make because of our natural tendencies. Many things are a bit better in some circumstances, a bit worse in others - but we have to fit them into a straitjacket of good/bad. I am firm, you are assertive, he is arrogant: we are talking about the same quality, but it is neither good nor bad - but custom forces us to cast it as one and thus not the other.
  • 1) What you are here talking about, are "dimensions". Not necessarily usual geometrical dimensions, but we can eventually use geometrical dimensions as a model for them. So we would have the up/down axis, the left/right axis or the good/bad axis. Many of these axis contains the two directions. For instance, you could never be happy if unhappyness did not exist, as hard as it sounds... 2) "Antonyms, from the Greek anti ("opposite") and onoma ("name") are word pairs that are opposite in meaning, such as hot and cold, obese and skinny, and up and down. Words may have different antonyms, depending on the meaning. Both long and tall are antonyms of short. Antonyms are of four types: 1. Gradable antonyms are two ends of the spectrum (slow and fast) but can have variations. 2. Complementary antonyms are pairs that express absolute opposites, like mortal and immortal. 3. Relational antonyms are pairs in which one describes a relationship between two objects and the other describes the same relationship when the two objects are reversed, such as parent and child, teacher and student, or buy and sell. 4. Auto-antonyms are the same words that can mean the opposite of themselves under different contexts or having separate definitions - enjoin (to prohibit, issue injunction; to order, command) - fast (moving quickly; fixed firmly in place) - cleave (to split; to adhere) - sanction (punishment, prohibition ; permission) - stay (remain in a specific place, postpone; guide direction, movement) " Source: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Antonym 3) Further information: http://www.enchantedlearning.com/themes/opposites.shtml http://www.123child.com/UBB/showthread.php?t=6339 The Sinister Hand: http://www.abc.net.au/quantum/scripts98/9807/feature2.htm If you had to invent a language with no more than one hundred words: http://www.everything2.com/index.pl?node_id=1545073 http://www.listen-up.org/samples/opposit.htm
