A meat market or in an older tongue, it was referred to as a 'shambles'(like in the King James bible), is a place where they sell meat and organs from animals.

It is also what we used to refer to our most popular gym where everyone would go and get 'looked over' as they worked out, getting all sweaty and hopefully get a date or at least a few phone numbers for later;-)

Apart from the obvious meaning of the expression, a market for selling meat like Smithfield Market in London (http://www.urban75.org/london/smithfield.html) it is also used as a derogatory term for beauty contests (http://www.socialistworker.co.uk/art.php?id=1778). I've been to the first, but not the second.
