  • I do not think so. In order to know something like that requires some kind of conciousness. That is something plants defiantly do not have!
  • How do you know that they have no sense of self? I think that they might. It has been reported that plants can secrete an insecticide if they are attacked by bugs, will respond to music and do poorly in a situation where the care remains constant but feelings toward the plant become hostile. We used to think that animals had no intelligence. It was all instinct. The only thing that has changed is that we are beginning to look at things with more possibility. We are getting smarter. I always find it funny that many animals learn our language and rules, yet we (the smart species) cannot return the favor!
  • This is similar to the "Do Insects feel pain" question. You could just as easily ask "how do we know that other people know they are alive?" You have no direct evidence they do! Perhaps a better way of phrasing it is "how do we know other minds/consciousnesses exist?" Simply put, we don't. So to the question: DO plants "know" they are alive i.e. are they concious? Well if we can't even be certain another person is what chance have we? We can appeal to the theory that since other people are physically similar to us and we assume (a BIG assumption) that conciousness is generated by physical structures (the brain) that other people have similar mental functions. Plants have a far simpler neurological construction so they would be far less aware than we would be. That's the best we can do really. Or the best I can do lol ;)
