  • You can't tell and neither can your doctor simply by feeling the lump. Specific medical tests are required to make a proper diagnosis. If you have a lump somewhere I certainly wouldn't take my GP's word that it is nothing. Insist on going for further up exams, most cancers are treatable if caught early. Be proactive and save your life. In all likelihood it is nothing but it is better to have a definitive answer either way rather then a guess based on a rather simplictic exam.
  • I don't think it's really for you to decide... the point of the monthly breast self-exam is to become familiar with what is "normal" for you (and lots of us have bumpy breasts...) so you can recognize when something is just "not right." Of course, no matter how well you (and your significant other) are acquainted with the intricacies of your body, you should still have your clinical exams as necessary (is it yearly? i just started all this mess myself)
