It would be better to secure a Joomla site by spending some money on specialized component. Sometimes manually tweaking and hacking doesn't work and results in major data loss!

Hello, there are several things that you can do to tweak your site for security. Actually I am doing this at the moment. 1) Visit Joomla Security section, you do not want to be that person "Help my site has been HACKED". "Another .htaccess question" 2) Download Joomla Tool Suite: This is a security check on your site http://joomlacode.org/gf/project/jts/ 3) Make sure you have the latest Joomla software updated, this is key in fixing any security holes 4) There are several components that you can use and buy, here are three of my favorites, a) Protect Configuration Site- this protect your configuration.php http://extensions.joomla.org/component/option,com_mtree/task,viewlink/link_id,2067/Itemid,35/ b)Jdefender, http://joomlaequipment.com/content/view/2/5/ c)Jcheck Security Monitor http://www.ravenswoodit.co.uk/ I hope this helps.
