  • Snow can be cut and shaped alot easier than ice.
  • I know some Aluets, and none of them have ever built an igloo. Packed and frozen snow can be easily shaped and is a very good insulator. Ice is not.
  • Snow is easier to manipulate, lighter and, because it contains a lot of trapped air, a better insulator than ice. Approx 10 inches of snow are needed to melt down to 1 inch of ice - or water. So packed snow is going to wight 1/10 as much as the same volume of ice. The remaining 9/10 is air. So, foe much the same reason as we insulate our houses with foam, the Esquimaux will insulate as well as build theirs with snow,.
  • Snow is easier to cut into the blocks they use,it would take ages to hack out blocks of ice.
  • answer 3 is correct answer 4 is incorrect, ice cut in the same size blocks would actually be a better insulator. but chainsaws aside the effort is not warranted. Both the snow and ice are within minute variances the same temperature, so radiance is not a factor, wind can get through snow but not ice. It is purely a question of labour.
  • You can't easily cut and shape ice and there isn't always an easy supply of ice around. And there is more air in snow so it's actually warmer than more solid ice.
