Can't answer for all species, but the moth, for instance, thinks it's flying in a straight line by keeping at a constant angle with the moon--but it mistakes a bright electric light for the moon and spirals in on it. Others may appreciate the heat, because they are cold-blooded and become more active where it's hotter. Predatory insects go where the prey are.
